INTRODUCTION =============== o This document provides information on the PlayStation 2 game Midnight Club Street Racing that does not explicitly appear in the manual included with the game. Many of the facts and tips found here will already be known to anyone who has played before; However, this document explores a wide variety of topics in detail, and may reveal useful information to novice and experienced players alike. o A PlayStation 2 Computer Entertainment System, model SCPH-30001, equipped with two Sony Analog controllers (DUALSHOCK 2, model SCPH-10010) was used as the test platform for this game. o This document is 79 characters wide, and is best viewed in a monospaced font. GAME CONTROL =============== o When first starting up this game (as when powering-on or resetting the PS2), several animated introductory segments are displayed. These segments can be halted a few seconds after they begin by pressing certain controller buttons. For example, the latter parts of the "Rockstar Games", "Angel Studios" and "street racing montage" segments can be bypassed by pressing the X button. o In general, whenever a Career game is loaded the player will be in "Cruise For Some Action" mode. An exception to this is when a player has won the World Championship, in which case that race will be started again whenever that Career game is loaded. o It may become impossible to switch between forward and rear views when the player's vehicle is shifted into reverse. This problem can be remedied by shifting the vehicle into a forward gear. o Whenever the "Cell Phone" screen is preceded by the "WHAT NOW?" menu, the Triangle button can be pressed to "back out" of the screen and re-display the menu. o When dialing a Hookman's Cell Phone number, a player may sometimes get a busy signal, and the message "You do not get an answer". When this happens, the player can return to "Cruise For Some Action" mode and dial that number again to be challenged to a Head to Head race. o Whenever a player finishes a Head to Head or Waypoint race, there may be a momentary delay before the "Race Results" screen appears. At any time before the results are displayed, a player may change/modify the first-person view if desired. o Whenever the "WHAT NOW?" menu is preceded by the "Race Results" screen, the Triangle button can be pressed to "back out" of the menu and re-display the race results. o On the "WHAT NOW?" menu, the "Next Race" option will load the next unlocked race in the current city. If no new unlocked races exist, the first unlocked race in that city will be loaded. o It is advisable to Leave a Career only after returning to "Cruise For Some Action" mode. This can help a player avoid repeating races that the player has already won. o Unless otherwise noted, all driving controls and buttons referenced in this document conform to the default "Config A" controller setup. ("Config A" is one of 4 driving-control configurations that may be selected in this game.) 2. RACES: GENERAL ================= o Computer-controlled opponents include these drivers: Emilio Sanchez, Larry Muller, Keiko Hatano, Kareem Windross, Lukas Howell-Jones, Emily Morton, Darren Thurrock, and the World Champion (whose identity is revealed when defeated in Career mode). Note that "Homeboy" vehicles are typically driverless. o New York Head to Head races 1, 2 and 3, and New York Waypoint races 1, 2 and 3 are not locked in Arcade mode. o There are no secondary opponents in Head to Head races; There are no time limits in Waypoint races. o In 2-player Head to Head races, the normal single-player time limit is quadrupled. o In 2-player races, the second player will replace the Hookman in Head to Head races, and will replace one of the Homeboys in Waypoint races. o During any 2-player race, if the player in first place forfeits, both players lose the race. o An on-screen directional arrow can be switched on or off in the "Extras"/ "Options" menu. This is a blue arrow that appears at the top of the display window for each player-controlled vehicle. In Head to Head races, this arrow points to the next waypoint/goal that the player must reach; In Waypoint races, this arrow points to the waypoint/goal that is closest to the player's vehicle. o If all participants in a race fail to finish the race (participants all get "DNF" scores), then the race is considered a loss for the player(s). A player must always reach a goal in the allotted time (where applicable) in order to win a race; a player cannot win a race "by default". o In a Career, Waypoint races are initiated in "Cruise For Some Action" mode by chasing a Hookman at close range until the Hookman stops and challenges the player to a race. Head to Head races are initiated by calling a Hookman's cell phone to challenge that Hookman to a race. A player may call a Hookman's cell phone at any time after defeating that Hookman in at least 1 Waypoint race. o Note that all New York races become inaccessible in a Career after the player wins New York Waypoint 10 and chooses the "Fly To London" option. Once a player leaves New York, any locked vehicles belonging to New York Hookmen will remain locked and unavailable for the remainder of that Career. o In Waypoint races, the on-screen timer will stop if it reaches 99:59:99. o Many of the 16 possible combinations of weather and time-of-day will have little effect on overall driving conditions. Note that "fog" density can vary between heavy and very light, depending on the time of day in the city. 3. UNLOCKING TAXI CABS: SUPER TAXI =================================== o This is one of 5 vehicles that are unlocked by driving through special hidden areas during Arcade: Cruise (Joyride) mode. This vehicle can only be used in Arcade-mode games; It cannot be unlocked or used in a Career-mode game. o To unlock the Super Taxi, start a new game in Arcade: Cruise (Joyride) mode, and select New York as the city. For best results set Traffic and Pedestrian levels to zero, set weather to Clear, and utilize the map display window. Below are driving instructions for use with a standard Taxi with automatic transmission. o When you first appear in New York, your Taxi will be facing south. Drive south to the middle of the green park area at the rounded southern tip of the map. Look for a cluster of gray monoliths (a war memorial). From there, continue south to the long, low wall nearby. Turn left and follow the wall to a crosswalk at an intersection. Turn around to face the opposite direction, with your front bumper over the crosswalk. Hold down the X button continuously and follow the wall. As you pass the memorial, turn right, towards an opening in a low red brick building to the northwest. Drive up the right half of the ramp inside this building, and jump to the roof of the next. Find the rotating pink aurora, and drive through it to unlock the Super Taxi. 11. UNLOCKING TAXI CABS: MARAUDER ================================= o This is one of 5 vehicles that are unlocked by driving through special hidden areas during Arcade: Cruise (Joyride) mode. This vehicle can only be used in Arcade-mode games; It cannot be unlocked or used in a Career-mode game. o To unlock the Marauder, start a new game in Arcade: Cruise (Joyride) mode, and select New York as the city. For best results set Traffic and Pedestrian levels to zero, set weather to Clear, and utilize the map display window. Below are driving instructions for use with a standard Taxi with automatic transmission. o When you first appear in New York, your Taxi will be facing south. Head right to drive to the west edge of map, then turn left and start driving south along the edge of the map. On your left you will begin passing by 4 large red brick buildings, one after another. At the corner of the fourth one, look for an opening. Just inside is a ramp. Park your Taxi with its front bumper at the bottom edge of the ramp. Hold down the X button continuously while following the ramp around to a window at the top. Aim your Taxi so it goes through the right-hand side of the window. With luck, you will jump across to the third building, and crash through a window on its second floor. Slowly drive through the rotating pink aurora to unlock the Marauder. 12. UNLOCKING KURUMA: FAASUTO GR ================================ o This is one of 5 vehicles that are unlocked by driving through special hidden areas during Arcade: Cruise (Joyride) mode. This vehicle can only be used in Arcade-mode games; It cannot be unlocked or used in a Career-mode game. o To unlock the Faasuto GR, start a new game in Arcade: Cruise (Joyride) mode, and select London as the city. Below are driving instructions for use with a standard Taxi with automatic transmission. o When you first appear in London, press the R2 button to look behind you, and you'll see a blue "SPEED" sign on the corner of a building. Turn around and drive over to the 4-way intersection under that sign. In the middle of the intersection, face that blue sign on the building, and turn slightly to the right. Drive down the street, keeping that building on your left. When you get to an intersection, continue straight through until you get to the next intersection. Up ahead to the left you'll see a green dome rising above a wide, low building. Proceed forward and look left for a short ramp leading to a window in that building. Drive through that window and look for a rotating pink aurora ahead. Drive through it to unlock the Faasuto GR. 13. UNLOCKING KURUMA: FAASUTO GS ================================ o This is one of 5 vehicles that are unlocked by driving through special hidden areas during Arcade: Cruise (Joyride) mode. This vehicle can only be used in Arcade-mode games; It cannot be unlocked or used in a Career-mode game. o To unlock the Faasuto GS, start a new game in Arcade: Cruise (Joyride) mode, and select London as the city. For best results set Traffic and Pedestrian levels to zero, set weather to Clear, and utilize the map display window. Below are driving instructions for use with a standard Taxi with automatic transmission. o When you first appear in London, press the R2 button to look behind you, and you'll see a blue "SPEED" sign; remember it. Switch to forward view, and drive up to where the grass turns to reddish stone. Bear left to stay on the stone, keeping a low fence to your right. Continue following that fence until you come to a street. Continue forward through one 4-way intersection, and into the next. Turn around to face back the way you came. Hold down the X button continuously and head back to the red stone. In the red area, swerve right to pass a wide patch of gray stone, then aim for the blue SPEED sign. Go up the ramp below the sign to jump to a nearby roof. Look left for a rotating pink aurora, and drive through it to unlock the Faasuto GS. 14. UNLOCKING KURUMA: FAASUTO GT ================================ o This is one of 5 vehicles that are unlocked by driving through special hidden areas during Arcade: Cruise (Joyride) mode. This vehicle can only be used in Arcade-mode games; It cannot be unlocked or used in a Career-mode game. o To unlock the Faasuto GT, start a new game in Arcade: Cruise (Joyride) mode, and select London as the city. Below are driving instructions for use with a standard Taxi with automatic transmission. o When you first appear in London, press the Select button until the entire map of London is visible. In the bottom left corner of the map, just above the sharp bend in the river, is a circular web of roadways. Drive your Taxi to the center of this circle, and drive around the center until you see a large red building. Look for a ramp running up along one side of it. Park with your front bumper at the bottom edge of the ramp, then hold down the X button continuously to drive up. As you reach the top edge of the ramp, turn sharply so that you'll go airborne towards the right. Once airborne, hold down both brake buttons so that you'll come to a quick stop when you land. Look for a rotating pink aurora nearby, and drive through it to unlock the Faasuto GT. 15. The London City Champ (Darren) should now appear in the city. R: In "Cruise For Some Action" mode, chase Darren (red 2-door wedge) until he stops and issues a challenge. Defeat Darren, Kareem, Emily and Lukas in LONDON WAYPOINT 10 to win the city Championship and unlock Amata Fiorenza. Choose the "Race The World Champ" option on the "WHAT NOW?" menu at the end of the race. At this point, the player will be given one final chance to choose a different vehicle to use. S: Defeat the World Champ, Kareem and Darren in LONDON WAYPOINT 11 to win the World Championship and unlock Zender Alpha. If all Hookmen in both cities have been defeated in all Head to Head and Waypoint races during this Career, then the Zender Type-S vehicle will also be unlocked. o In order to remove a Hookman from a city, a player must win in 3 different Waypoint races with that Hookman. Waypoint races are initiated in "Cruise For Some Action" mode by chasing a Hookman at close range until the Hookman stops and challenges the player to a race. o When a player first appears in New York during "Cruise For Some Action" mode, the player's vehicle will be facing south. Larry will be to the south (ahead of the player's vehicle, at the top of map display), Emilio will be to the west (right), Keiko is to the north (behind, at the bottom of map display). When at least 2 Hookmen are removed from New York, Kareem (City Champ) will appear to the southeast (ahead-left, or top-left of the map display), and orbits the map counterclockwise. o On rare occasions during a Career, a City Champ may fail to appear after 2 (or all 3) Hookmen have been removed from the city. When this happens it may become necessary to abandon the current Career and begin a new one. o When a player first appears in London during "Cruise For Some Action" mode, the player's vehicle will be facing southwest. Emily will be to the west (ahead and slightly to the right of the player's vehicle, towards the top of the map display), Kareem will be to the southeast (left), Lukas is to the east (behind and to the left, towards the bottom-left of the map display). When at least 2 Hookmen are removed from London, Darren (City Champ) will appear to the northwest (right), and begins to orbit clockwise around a large section of the map on the north side of the Thames river. o In "Cruise for Some Action" mode, Hookmen will cruise the city in the lowest (least powerful/least favorite) vehicle available to them. If the player has taken all of a Hookman's vehicles, the Hookman will cruise in a duplicate of their lowest vehicle. o A colored indicator will hover above opponent vehicles (Hookmen, City Champs) during "Cruise For Some Action" mode. This indicator will be one of three colors: Red indicates that the opponent is ignoring (or is unaware of) the player; yellow indicates that the opponent is aware of the player's presence; green indicates that the opponent is expecting the player vehicle to remain nearby. If an opponent's indicator turns from green to red, then too much distance has accrued between the two vehicles (the player will have a few seconds to close the gap and have the indicator immediately return to green). Once a player covers enough distance close to a green-marked opponent, the opponent will stop and challenge the player to a Waypoint race. o When a Hookman or City Champ is stopped by a player, a Waypoint race will automatically ensue; the player will not have a chance to change vehicles before the race. o Head to Head races are initiated by calling a Hookman's cell phone to challenge that Hookman to a race. A player may call a Hookman's cell phone at any time after defeating that Hookman in at least 1 Waypoint race. o All Head to Head races are optional; however, a Hookman's vehicles can only be unlocked (made available to the player) by defeating that Hookman in Head to Head races. o New York Waypoint Race 10 may be repeated several times in Career mode if the player does not immediately choose the "Fly To London" option after winning the race the first time. Similarly, London Waypoint Race 10 may be repeated several times in Career mode if the player does not immediately choose the "Race The World Champ" option after winning the race the first time. o Note that all New York races become inaccessible in a Career after the player wins New York Waypoint 10 and chooses the "Fly To London" option. Once a player leaves New York, any locked vehicles belonging to New York Hookmen will remain locked and unavailable for the remainder of that Career. o The Super Taxi, Marauder, and the Kuruma cars cannot be unlocked in Career mode. (This includes 11 races that can be unlocked in either mode, but are only accessible in Arcade mode.) o It is advisable to Leave a Career only after returning to "Cruise For Some Action" mode. This can help a player avoid repeating races that the player has already won. o In general, whenever a Career game is loaded the player will be in "Cruise For Some Action" mode. An exception to this is when a player has won the World Championship, in which case that race will be started again whenever that Career game is loaded. o Note that the Zender Type-S vehicle can only be unlocked in Career mode, and only after all possible Head to Head and Waypoint races in both cities have been won during that Career. (All Hookmen in both cities, both City Champs, and the World Champion must all be defeated, in a total of 39 races.) It is advisable to copy game data files to a separate memory card periodically. 17. ARCADE MODE: CAPTURE THE FLAG ================================= o Capture The Flag games allow a maximum of 6 vehicles: 1 player and 0 to 5 computer opponents, or 2 players and 0 to 4 computer opponents. (The manual that comes with the game incorrectly states that up to 6 computer opponents may participate.) o On the map display, the flag will always be represented as a yellow disc. When any vehicle picks up the flag, the yellow disc will appear on top of the triangular symbol for that vehicle. The flag delivery point on the map display will appear as a green disc. o When a new flag first appears on the map, it will give 75 points to the first vehicle that touches it. If the flag is dropped by, or taken away from, that vehicle, it will give 25 pickup points to any player/opponent vehicle that touches it. If the flag is dropped/taken a second time it will be worth 10 pickup points; If the flag is dropped/taken again, it will be worth no pickup points. o Flag values table: Flag status | Flag now worth -----------------|----------------- New flag appears.|.75 pickup points Dropped 1 time...|.25 pickup points Dropped 2 times..|.10 pickup points Dropped 3+ times.|..0 pickup points ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: "Dropped" flags include any undelivered flag that is released by a vehicle under any circumstances. o In each city there are dozens of predetermined points where new flags may appear. NITROS/NITROUS ================== o "Nitros" is a feature available on certain vehicles. By default, the Nitros feature is activated with the up arrow or L3 button on the controller. Pressing the Nitros button injects Nitrous Oxide into the engine, providing a quick surge of power. Depending on the type of car, Nitros may be used up to 15 times consecutively before running out. o When driving a vehicle equipped with Nitros, a Nitrous indicator appears on screen above the vehicle's "damage bar". COMPUTER-CONTROLLED OPPONENTS ================================= o "Computer-controlled" opponents/vehicles include Hookmen, City Champs, the World Champ, and various "Homeboys". "Traffic" vehicles, police, and other vehicles are not included in the definition. o Computer-controlled opponents include these drivers: Emilio Sanchez, Larry Muller, Keiko Hatano, Kareem Windross, Lukas Howell-Jones, Emily Morton, Darren Thurrock, and the World Champion (whose identity is revealed when defeated in Career mode). Note that "Homeboy" vehicles are typically driverless. o The surface appearance (colors, decals, stripes) of some computer-controlled vehicles may be different than player-controlled vehicles of the same type. For example, a player-controlled Crusero Excellente will always have visible markings on the trunk; a computer-controlled Crusero Excellente may not. o In Waypoint races, Hookmen may use vehicles that they no longer possess. For example, a player may win Crusero Magnifico from Emilio in New York Head to Head race 7. Later on, the player may use that same car to challenge Emilio in New York Waypoint race 7. In this case Emilio and the player will both be driving Crusero Magnifico. o Some computer-controlled opponents may not use Nitros in vehicles that are normally equipped with Nitros. o Computer-controlled opponents may be reluctant to cross low traffic islands, sidewalk curbs and similar structures. o Some computer-controlled opponents may "cheat" by skipping waypoints in certain races. For example, in New York Waypoint race 14 the green Ascent 470ds ("Homeboy 2") will bypass the last waypoint on its way to the goal. 64. INSTANT REPLAY ================== o After driving a vehicle in a race, a player may choose the Instant Replay option on the "WHAT NOW?" menu at the end of the race. o Due to an error in the game, an Instant Replay may spontaneously halt, as if a Start button was pressed. (This problem also affects subsequent replays of the same race, occurring at the same point each time.) o The light bar and siren status of a player-controlled police vehicle during an entire replay session is determined by its light bar/siren status at the moment the Instant Replay option was selected. For example: A player uses a police vehicle in a 3-minute race, and turns on the light bar in the last 5 seconds, and leaves it on. If the player then chooses the Instant Replay option, the vehicle's light bar will be on during the entire 3-minute replay. 65. KNOWN BUGS ============== o It is possible to lose Arcade-mode data when swapping memory cards, changing between Careers, or at other times. It is advisable to copy game data files to a separate memory card periodically. o On rare occasions during a Career, a City Champ may fail to appear after 2 (or all 3) Hookmen have been removed from the city. When this happens it may become necessary to abandon the current Career and begin a new one. o On occasion the game may spontaneously freeze. When this happens, the game console will have to be reset/restarted. o New York Waypoint Race 10 may be repeated several times in Career mode if the player does not immediately choose the "Fly To London" (or "Instant Replay") option after winning the race the first time. Similarly, London Waypoint Race 10 may be repeated several times in Career mode if the player does not immediately choose the "Race The World Champ" (or "Instant Replay") option after winning the race the first time. o An Instant Replay may spontaneously halt, as if a Start button was pressed. o On occasion a fully-damaged vehicle that should regenerate does not. (This can happen to a vehicle during a Capture The Flag game, for example.) Such vehicles may be regenerated if they receive additional damage. o Occasionally a vehicle may pass into/through an otherwise impenetrable wall or solid object. When this happens, the vehicle may be removed from the city (it may slide off the edge of the map, or may drop through the ground and fall away from the map). If a removed vehicle was controlled by a player, the game may halt and restart. o "Traffic" vehicles may spontaneously appear or disappear at close range. On occasion they may also spontaneously "teleport" up on to bridges from below. o "Traffic" vehicles and pedestrians can sometimes be pushed into/through walls or other solid objects. o It may become impossible to switch between forward and rear views when the player's vehicle is shifted into reverse. This problem can be remedied by shifting the vehicle into a forward gear. o During live games or Instant Replays, the camera viewpoint can occasionally drift into buildings and other solid objects. o Pedestrians may not always appear in cities when the Pedestrian Density level is set to its highest value. o Occasionally parts of knocked-down objects (i.e. traffic-light poles) remain standing, or hovering in mid air. o On rare occasions the viewpoint of a player's vehicle will become distorted (camera viewpoint begins to drift away, or is reset to the wrong coordinates, etc.). This error tends to correct itself. o Music and/or sounds may fade out, or are cut short or overlapped by other sound effects. o On infrequent occasions a computer-controlled vehicle may become "lost" or "confused" during a game. When this happens, the vehicle may freeze in place with its engine running, may drive in circles continuously or drive in a direction opposite that of its intended goal, may attempt to force its way through impenetrable objects, or exhibit other types of similar behavior. Sometimes several computer-controlled vehicles become "lost" simultaneously. o Minor visual glitches can occur on occasion (textures overlapping improperly, minor errors in rendering objects, etc.). 66. COMPUTER-CONTROLLED: Non-player opponents (excludes "Traffic", police, etc.).
